Peonies are magnificent flowering plants belonging to the genus Paeonia, renowned for their spectacular, often fragrant blooms and long lifespan. These herbaceous perennials and woody shrubs are native to Asia, Europe, and western North America, with many species originating in China where they have been cultivated for over 2,000 years.
The flowers are the peony's crowning glory - large, full, and opulent with layers of silky petals that can span up to 8 inches across. They bloom in late spring to early summer in shades of pink, red, white, yellow, and coral, often with a rich, sweet fragrance. The buds are particularly charming, resembling tight, rounded marbles before unfurling into their full splendor.
Peonies are famously long-lived, with some plants surviving and blooming for decades or even over a century when properly established. They prefer cool winters and don't like to be disturbed once planted, leading to the gardening wisdom "plant peonies for your grandchildren." The plants also produce attractive, deeply divided foliage that provides structure in the garden even after the brief but spectacular blooming period ends.
In many cultures, peonies symbolize honor, wealth, romance, and beauty. In China, they're known as the "king of flowers" and represent nobility and honor. The peony's combination of breathtaking beauty, longevity, and symbolic significance has made it a treasured garden plant and a popular choice for bridal bouquets and special occasions.
