Lily bulbs are underground storage organs that serve as the foundation for growing beautiful lily flowers. These bulbs are typically oval or round in shape, composed of overlapping scales that store nutrients and energy for the plant. Unlike true bulbs such as tulips or daffodils, lily bulbs never go completely dormant and should never dry out completely.

Most lily bulbs are planted in fall, about 6-8 inches deep depending on the variety, in well-draining soil with good organic matter. They prefer locations with morning sun and afternoon shade, or at least 6 hours of sunlight daily. The bulbs develop extensive root systems both above and below the bulb itself, which is why deep planting is important.

Popular varieties include Asiatic lilies (early blooming, sturdy), Oriental lilies (fragrant, large flowers), and trumpet lilies (tall, dramatic). Lily bulbs can multiply over time, forming small bulblets that can be separated and replanted to create new plants. With proper care, lily bulbs can bloom reliably for many years, producing stunning flowers in colors ranging from pure white to deep burgundy, often with spotted or striped patterns.
