Amaryllis is a striking bulbous flowering plant best known for its large, trumpet-shaped blooms that make it a popular choice for indoor flowering during winter months. The most commonly cultivated species, Hippeastrum (often called amaryllis in horticulture), produces dramatic flowers that can reach 6-8 inches across, typically in shades of red, pink, white, orange, or striped combinations.
The plant grows from a large, rounded bulb that sends up a thick, hollow flower stalk called a scape, which can reach 12-24 inches tall. Each stalk typically bears 2-6 large, lily-like flowers that bloom in succession. The strap-shaped leaves are glossy green and usually emerge after or alongside the flowers, growing up to 18 inches long.
Native to South America, particularly the Andes mountains and Brazil, amaryllis has become a beloved houseplant worldwide. It's especially popular as a holiday gift because the bulbs can be timed to bloom indoors during winter. The plants prefer bright, indirect light and well-draining soil. After blooming, the bulb enters a dormant period and can be stored to reflower the following year. In warmer climates, some varieties can be grown outdoors year-round, where they may naturalize and form clumps over time.
